My @username is broken

  1. When users retweet my posts, the @username is that of @tweetmeme not my handle @rtwdave which is what I set in the back end.

    http://www.gobackpacking.com

I am using WP version 2.8.4
The Tweetmeme plugin version is 1.7.1

I know this occurred one one of my friend's blogs as well: http://twobackpackers.com

It was working when I first installed it and now it is broken. Please advise. rtwdave@gmail.com

    Thanks!

  2. Hi There,

I'm guessing you haven't put your source to username. Note in the wordpress plugin you don't need to include the @ we already provide that for you. If you include it then it will default back to @tweetmeme as it is an invalid username.

    Many thanks

  3. Sarah,

I did set the Source field to my Twitter username "rtwdave" without the @ symbol. Things were working fine, and I swear whatever went wrong happened after I updated the plugin to a more recent version. I know I'm not crazy! If you have an email address, I can send you a screenshot.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  4. Hi Dave,

Since it is only after an update I'd recommend you remove the button plugin server side and do a reinstall of it. I've not heard of this from anyone else so I'm thinking it's possibly down to a file being corrupted during the upgrade.

Can you give that a go and let me know how that goes.

    Many thanks

  5. Hi Sarah,

I deleted the plugin completely, and then reinstalled it, but it seemed to remember my custom settings (not sure how that happened?). I tested again and the same result.

    Thanks,

    Dave

  6. Are you sure that there's not something that is cached in your browser. It could be worth clearing cookies and saved web pages. It's starting to sound like a caching issue. Also flush your wp-supercache if you have it installed. Sometimes that can store stuff that you really don't want it to! :)

  7. I just tried retweeting from my account and it does show as your twitter username. I have a feeling that it's cached in your browser rather than anything else. :)

    Many thanks

  8. I am going through the same thing. When people hit the retweet button they are taken to your site and asked to link to Twitter and get permission to link Tweetmeme. It states that they would get a chance to review the tweet before it went out but it just sends it as is without their knowing what was sent. When I look, I have no retweets showing up under my Twitter account, instead people tell me they are picking up new members instead of me as it appears the message came from them and Tweetmeme as it states RT Tweetmeme and that appears like you are the originator of my original message. People click your name and go to your profile and my original tweet does not even appear there. I will cease using your button if you cannot ge this taken care of. This is recent, over the last two weeks. Like the gentleman above, I do not have my name with @ in the settings. It is happening on other people's computers not mine.

  9. Hi There,

If they say no to this then they will go straight to twitter and not use the connect, as stated here: http://blog.tweetmeme.com/2009/10/13/the-tweetmeme-button-gets-an-update/

They can change their user settings on a user by user basis by logging into TweetMeme and changing their profile settings.

If you leave your URL we can look into the behaviour that you say is happening when not accepting the connect but without it there's not a lot we can do to help.

The list of tweets will only show the last 7 days worth of tweets which would explain why you aren't seeing the original message.

    Thanks

  10. Sarah,

I understand the instinct to approach a request from the premise that the user is obviously doing something wrong, but I, too, can't get the username to work. I'm not doing anything foolish, such as including the @ symbol, ' ' symbols, or anything like misspelling my username. It's also not an issue of cache, as I've tried it on multiple computers.

I use Worpress (latest version) and have opted to insert the code manually (it's in the loop, I just needed more control over where it was going).

I've checked the settings numerous times and saved, but no matter what, the username displayed whenever I want to tweet a post stays @tweetmeme, and not the username I entered and saved.

Please, could you offer some suggestions? Thanks.

  11. Okay. Here is one thing I haven't come across in the help section. If you install the plugin on WP, configure everything, but choose manual from the display option, the manual code will not automatically change your username. It will only do so with the display settings set to 'top' 'bottom' etc.

Seriously, explaining that somewhere could have saved me a lot of time! ha.

  12. Ok. So I figured out exactly where things got confusing for me:

    1) I downloaded the plugin and installed it in WP
    2) Opted to position it manually, but couldn't figure it out (since you make no mention of the code)
    3) Searched online, and found a solution, but it was the button code, not the WP manual code
    4) The problem I didn't spot: The manual button code that is retrieved on your website has nothing to do with the WP plugin, so obviously they don't communicate
    5) Finally, after ages of searching the help forums, I found the WP manual code, which is:

    <?php if (function_exists('tweetmeme')) echo tweetmeme();?>

    Problem solved.

I do, however feel that my hassles (and those of others) could be easily solved by mentioning that line of code on the WP repository, read me file, install instructions, and possibly even as a comment in the actual WP configuration section.

  13. Hey Mark - thanks a bunch for posting the resolution to this. I too had the setting on "manual" and when I switched the code for:
    <?php if (function_exists('tweetmeme')) echo tweetmeme();?>
my username was being populated as it should.

Sarah - hopefully you can update the plugin, or documentation, because I've seen A LOT of retweets with the tweetmeme in them and I know that's not the intentional setting by the bloggers whose posts are being retweeted.

    Thanks

  14. I just put the button up on my blog (located at http://angiemarion.blogspot.com) and changed the code to point to my Twitter name @pricousins but it's still pointing to @tweetmeme - I cleared my cache, removed the code, and readded the code but it's still doing the same thing. I don't want the Blogger widget for TweetMeme because I want it on each individual post. Can someone help?

Posted 2 years ago by pricousins
  15. Hi pricousins please use the blogger template to change your tweetmeme source. The template can be found here: http://tweetmeme.com/about/plugins/blogger_template

    Many thanks
