URL points to the wrong story

  1. I am having the same problem (and this is not the first time).

My post is located at http://bestbizpractices.org/2010/02/17/social-media-%E2%80%93-building-influence-reputation-profits/.

The TweetMeme button produces the shortened url of http://bit.ly/bCVGAV and the error message "URL points to the wrong story."

But when you enter the shortened URL into the browser it takes you to the right story.

How can I get this fixed quickly?

  2. Hi Sarah, can I add my site to the list of those which are experiencing this error message.

Here is a link to an example page http://www.skiddplayer.com/video/9487/carrera-invasion-porsche-997-g

The shortened URL works fine (i.e. when copying and pasting it into my browser) and I have tried changing from a compact button to the full-sized one - just in case.

    I have the Tweetmeme button working fine on my other sites, for example;

    http://www.skiddmark.com/pandion-concept-marks-100-years-for-alfa-romeo/

Not sure what steps to try next, so would appreciate some advice.

    Thanks

  3. Hi Sarah,

I just signed up for Tweetmeme and think it would be a great application except I'm having the same issue that everyone else is reporting here.

Here is what I've found. When I installed the tweetmeme button, there were several posts that had already been tweeted. Anytime I try to retweet one of these posts, I get the error url points to the wrong story.

However, all of the posts that weren't previously tweeted seem to work fine.

Here is an example of one that is failing.

    Thanks for any help.

  4. I just found something interesting that may explain the problem.

Before the I had Tweetmeme on my site, visitors would tweet the actual url of the site. Now that tweetmeme is installed, the shortened url redirects to the actual url of the page, but it is adding tracking parameters for Google Analytics. I believe these tracking parameters are what is causing the url to appear different.

Here is the way my page url was tweeted before adding tweetmeme to the site.

Here is the url that tweetmeme is redirecting the shortened url to.

Used Digg Digg Wordpress Plugin to install the tweetmeme option. Now when I am trying to tweet something my blog it is showing me "URL points to the wrong story."

But I have successfully tweet many other articles from different other news sites and blog. Please help me to resolve this problem.

  7. Well, Here is a fix that I figured out for this" URL points to wrong story error"

Look in your WP admin/permalink Settings.

    Do you have "Custom" selected?

If you have more than one structure setup, you may have this:(no quotes"")
    "/%category% %postname%"

Your URL may look like this when you go to it from your WP page:
    http://www.pxmediainc.com/wordpress/web-design-blog%20tweetmeme-testing-post

The "%20" is being created by the single space in between the two permalink structures you have set.
    "/%category% %postname%"
    %" "%,

    THE FIX:
Remove the space and add a forward slash "/"
    Like this:
    "/%category%/%postname%"

Wow! it's sweet. About 3 hours reading and screwing around. But it works.
    Enjoy

  8. Hello Sarah, I`m also having this problem. Actually varios problems. When I use the plugin at a page with more than 1 article, the firts show the icon with ? and the others seem ok but when I try to retweet it shows the "URL points to the wrong story" message.

I have left the plugin at http://www.arcotrading.com.br/index.php/Agenda-e-Noticias/a-equipe.html for you to have a look if possible and will keep my hope for us to work it out since it is a beautifull plugin.

    Thanks,
    Andre

  10. Hello, we are also experiencing this in on our installation. It seems like it applies to only certain URL's which have exclamation (!) or questions marks (?).

Has this been resolved, or plan to be soon?

  11. In regards to my above post, here is a link which does not work, while others which do not have exclamation marks or question marks do:

  12. ? and ! are invalid URL characters and do not follow standards, as such these are not supported.

We have already answered how to resolve the issue many times previously in both this post and post: http://help.tweetmeme.com/forum/topic/754

As such please follow the instructions as stated.#

  13. Hi Sarah, (!) is not an invalid URL. This is an excerpt from the URL RFC Standard:

    http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1738.txt:

Thus, only alphanumerics, the special characters "$-_.+!*'(),", and
reserved characters used for their reserved purposes may be used
    unencoded within a URL.

Question Marks are invalid, and I can understand those not working, but exclamation marks should be allowed.

  14. From what I understand our dev team are following the standards and I'm not an expert on what is included in those.

    Also please read the following:

The only reason for a button to suddenly stop working and having this error is if you have changed a setting on your site that would provide us with a different URL to the one that was there when the very first button was rendered.

If it is something that changed recently and required us to re-crawl your site then the ping service would have updated that on our end. Since you say that you've already run that, this would suggest that your site is showing one URL but actually pointing to a different one.

Unfortunately we don't have the ability to fix your site, that is something you would need to look into as only you know what you have changed between the two posts. In all likelihood there will be a plugin not functioning as it should do or a canonical link that has been misconfigured.

    Many thanks
    Sarah

  16. Additional info: Tried the following today:

    Deleted and reinstall plugin
Upgraded from WP 2.9.1 to 2.9.2

    Here is the source section:

  17. I experienced the same error message. After reading through the comments I assumed the problem was with my title. I used an em dash in my title which also showed up in the URL. Replacing the em dash with a dash in the permalink (I left it in the title) made tweetmeme create a new shortener URL and problem solved.

  18. After some testing I have determined that it has to do with punctuation in the article titles (apostrophe's, question marks, etc). I have noticed that you see the error right away if you are not logged into twitter when using Tweetmeme; then you login and Tweetmeme redirects you back to the post page after login. Thus, I think something is amiss with how Tweetmeme handles the redirect and the title (maybe it is not being escaped/url-encoded properly? I say that because if I am logged into twitter prior to using Tweetmeme I do not get the error in question at all.

Question marks are a different matter I get an error no matter what logged in or not whenever I press the Tweet button in the Tweetmeme window.
